See what others have to say:

"I appreciate that my father is treated with patience and kindness and that all the staff members seem to be emotionally invested in the participants. I am completely comfortable when he is there because it is not just a place for him to be. It is a place where he is becoming someone new."

Caregivers

In Northern Virginia alone, there are currently more than 22,000 people estimated to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. More than 7 out of 10 people live at home where family and friends provide approximately 10% of their care. Their caregivers often make great sacrifices, essentially sharing the journey of the illness with their loved one.

At Alzheimer's Family Day Center (AFDC), we have learned that caregiving is both a science and an art. We have been providing relief to caregivers in Northern Virginia through respite at our adult day care center, and by providing direct support to caregivers through support groups and educational programs.

Support Groups
Support groups offer people in like circumstances the chance to share practical advice, discuss frustrations and fears and connect with others who are on a similar journey. Three separate groups meet regularly at Alzheimer's Family Day Center at other locations in the county for individual caregivers and for couples facing the challenges of Alzheimer's. Click here for more information, and support group meeting dates.

Educational Programs
AFDC offers special classes designed to help caregivers build their skills and confidence while learning more about Alzheimer's resources in the community. Our practical series of free "Classes for Caregivers" is offered the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. Click here for more information, and current class schedule.
