BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON STEPHEN MCCONNELL


Stephen McConnell is Vice President for Advocacy and Public Policy at the Alzheimer’s Association, a national voluntary health organization with a nationwide network of chapters. He joined the Association in 1989 when he opened the Association’s Washington, DC based public policy office. In addition to his public policy role, he has directed the program services division and in 2002 served as the Association’s interim President and CEO.

Before joining the Alzheimer’s Association, Dr. McConnell spent seven years on Capitol Hill, as chief of staff for the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging under the chairmanship of Sen. John Heinz and as a professional staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives, Select Committee on Aging, under the chairmanship of Rep. Claude Pepper. He also directed a national issue campaign on long term care during the 1988 Presidential election cycle.

Before coming to Washington in 1980, Dr. McConnell held a research associate appointment in the Andrus Gerontology Center of the University of Southern California. Dr. McConnell has directed research projects on various aspects of employment, health, housing, and the cultural components of aging. He has been a teacher and has published in the fields of gerontology and social policy. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Southern California.
